Q: How much horsepower does a locked fan clutch rob from the engine?
A: The parasitic loss is significant. A locked fan clutch can consume 15-30 horsepower or even more on large engines at higher RPMs. This is because it takes a substantial amount of energy to spin a large, rigid fan through the air at engine speed. This directly translates to noticeably sluggish acceleration and reduced fuel efficiency. A properly functioning clutch reclaims this power when it's not needed for cooling.
Q: How to extend fan clutch life for trucks under long-term heavy loads?
A: For trucks in heavy-load use, clean the radiator regularly to prevent clogging—this reduces clutch workload. Check silicone oil levels (refill if low) and keep drive belt tension proper. Avoid frequent hard acceleration to stabilize clutch load. Inspect bearings every 60,000km to catch wear early, extending clutch life.
Q: Can I measure the temperature of my fan clutch to see if it's working?
A: Yes, this is a excellent professional diagnostic technique. Use an infrared thermometer (IR gun).
1.Start with a completely cold engine and note the ambient temperature.
2.Start the engine and let it idle. Do not rev it.
3.After 5-10 minutes, point the IR gun at the center of the fan clutch's front face.
4.A good clutch will show a temperature rise as the bi-metallic spring is heated by radiator air. It may reach ~100-130°F (38-54°C).
5.A failed (locked) clutch will heat up very little, as it's not modulating.
6.A failed (seized) clutch will get very hot, very quickly, often matching the radiator temperature.
